Because of the population density and concentration of cultural and scenic attractions in the Colorado Springs/Pikes Peak region, this trip encompasses a much smaller geographical area than any of our other tours. The itinerary begins with an excursion along the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains Scenic Drives, followed by an elegant dinner aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. On the following day, a Sunday brunch at the famous Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs is capped by a visit to the richly colored sandstone formations and vertical rock spires located in the Garden of the Gods. The Cripple Creek Historic District, site of one of the last great gold rushes in 1891, is next on the itinerary. An excursion to the summit of Pikes Peak, via the cog railway, constitutes the high point of this tour and provides access to the same panoramic vista which so inspired Katharine Lee Bates that she composed the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" immediately after her visit in 1893. A leisurely drive along the South Park Tarryall Loop Scenic Drive and dinner at the historic Briarhurst Manor provide the finishing touches for the final travel day of this tour.
