This tour features mountain ranges flanked by the I-70 corridor which transects Colorado from Denver to the Utah border, most notably the Never Summer Mountains and portions of the Front Range encompassed by Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as the rugged Elk Range near Aspen. The itinerary begins with a leisurely drive up the Peak to Peak Highway to Estes Park, the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. You will then traverse this jewel of the Colorado Rockies via the Trail Ridge Road and return to the interstate to resume your westward journey, first to Vail and then on to Grand Junction near the western border of Colorado. After visiting Colorado National Monument, the tour route turns eastward and follows the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway, with a stopover at Crested Butte. The aesthetic highlight of the tour, a visit to Maroon Lake, is next on the itinerary. As you stand on the shores of that lake and gaze upon the towering Maroon Bells, it will quickly become evident why this vista is, arguably, THE iconic image for all of Colorado. This tour concludes with a resounding flourish by traveling up the highest paved road in all of North America to the summit parking lot of Mount Evans, one of 53 Colorado peaks that exceed 14,000 feet in elevation. (It should be noted that the last five miles of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway are closed the day after Labor Day.) From there, it's back to Colorado Springs and home.
