Often thought of as a single range of mountains, the Front Range actually consists of ten different subranges which form the great rampart that separates the high plains of eastern Colorado from the rest of the state. Departing from Colorado Springs, our Front Range tour begins with a ride and elegant luncheon aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, followed by a leisurely drive up the Peak to Peak Highway to Estes Park, gateway to one of Colorado’s crown jewels, Rocky Mountain National Park. After traversing this alpine wonderland via the Trail Ridge Road, you will return to Colorado Springs and tour the picturesque Garden of the Gods. A trip to the summit of Pikes Peak via the cog railway and visit to the Cripple Creek Historic District are next on the itinerary, followed by an excursion on portions of the Wet Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Scenic Drives and a ride on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad from La Veta to Alamosa. After a morning spent in Great Sand Dunes National Monument, the tour follows the headwaters of the Arkansas River northward through terrain bordered on the west by the Sawatch and Mosquito mountain ranges. Although not visually spectacular, the Sawatch Mountains encompass the highest contiguous territory of any range in the Rocky Mountains. Fifteen of Colorado’s 53 peaks which exceed 14,000 feet in elevation are located in the Sawatch Mtns., including Mount Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado (http://www.14ers.com/ ranges_sw.html). This tour concludes with a resounding flourish by traveling up the highest paved road in all of North America to the summit parking lot of Mount Evans. From there, it's back to Colorado Springs and home.
